Frequently Asked Questions

Who are you, and what kind of work do you make?

I’m Joana Pereira da Costa, a multidisciplinary visual artist and performance maker exploring how the body communicates beyond words — through scent, taste, and touch. My performances merge feminist theory, intimacy, and sensory design, often challenging the boundaries between audience and performer.

What do you mean by “sensory” or “olfactory” performance?

I use scent and taste as dramaturgical languages — ways to tell stories that can’t be seen or easily spoken. Instead of relying on visual spectacle, my work invites audiences to inhale emotion, memory, and experience. Smell, for me, becomes a kind of political intimacy — a reminder that art can exist in the invisible.

Where can I see your performances?

I perform across the UK, Portugal and internationally, in spaces that range from traditional theatres to galleries and immersive installations.
Upcoming and past works are listed on the Work page. For updates, you can follow me on Instagram or join my mailing list.

Can I collaborate with you?

I’m always open to collaboration — especially with musicians, perfumers, chefs, writers, and theatre-makers exploring new ways of storytelling.
You can reach me directly through the Contact page or email me at joanapereiradcosta@gmail.com with a short introduction and proposal.

What’s your background?

I began my artistic journey in fashion before turning to performance. That transition led me to explore how clothing, scent, and the body all shape visibility, vulnerability, and power.
I hold an MA from the Royal College of Art (London) and am currently pursuing further study in Advanced Theatre Practice at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

What inspires your work?

I’m drawn to silence, intimacy, and contradiction — the things that linger between words. My work is often autobiographical, transforming personal experiences into collective reflection. I’m inspired by feminist thinkers, scent itself, and the quiet rebellion of the body.

Can I feature, review, or write about your work?

Absolutely — I welcome critical dialogue. You can contact me for press materials, high-resolution images, or interview requests via the Contact page.

Do you sell scents or physical works?

Select objects and materials from my performances (such as scent samples or sculptural pieces) are occasionally available for exhibition or sale.
